The National Supreme Council of Resistance to Save Afghanistan marked the 106th anniversary of the country’s independence from Britain by stating that independence is not merely freedom from colonial rule, but must be defined by the presence of a legitimate, inclusive, and accountable political system.
In its statement for August 19, the council emphasized that genuine independence can only be realized under the rule of law, social justice, political participation, and protection of human rights.
According to the council, Afghanistan today lacks a legitimate government. Fundamental freedoms are violated, and women and girls have been stripped of their basic rights. This, they argue, has not only undermined the country’s independence and national dignity, but has cast a shadow of regression and despair over the future of Afghanistan’s youth.
The statement explicitly described the Taliban as a “totalitarian group” responsible for the country’s current crisis.
Several political figures, both inside and outside Afghanistan, also issued messages on the occasion, commemorating the country’s independence.
