Abdul Baqi Haqqani, head of the Taliban-run National Examination Authority, has said the group is not focused on making people happy, as there are “more important” matters that must be addressed.

Writing on his X account, Haqqani stated: “From both a religious and rational perspective, we are obliged to fulfill our religious and national duties. It is not our job to make people happy. If, in the course of these duties, someone’s happiness is achieved, that is a great blessing; otherwise, religious and national responsibilities take precedence over everything.”

On the eve of the fourth anniversary of Kabul’s fall, he described the current regime as “the outcome and trust of 50 years of the Afghan people’s sacrifices,” adding that this trust must be handed over to its rightful owner.

Haqqani did not clarify who he believes the “rightful owner” of power in Afghanistan is, but stressed there should be no negligence in this regard.

He previously served as the Taliban’s Minister of Higher Education.
