Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has called for the immediate suspension of all Afghan refugee resettlement programs. Citing a parliamentary report, the party claimed that no individuals in Afghanistan have faced harm for cooperating with Germany since the Taliban took power in 2021.

AfD sharply criticized Germany’s current and former governments for what it described as “disastrous” immigration policies, arguing they have negatively impacted national security and the country’s social welfare system.

According to AfD, around 400,000 citizens from Afghanistan have settled in Germany since the fall of the former republic.

The issue of Afghan refugees remains deeply divisive in German politics. Approximately 2,300 individuals—currently in Afghanistan and Pakistan—are still waiting for resettlement despite receiving legally binding commitments from the German government.

On August 31, a group of 47 were relocated to Germany. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has pledged that all remaining cases will be resolved by the end of the year.
