Five days after the initial earthquake on August 31, aftershocks continue to rattle eastern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, at least three notable aftershocks have occurred in the past five and a half hours.

At 2:16 a.m., a 4.9-magnitude tremor struck 35 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, with its epicenter located 10 kilometers underground.

At 6 a.m., a stronger aftershock measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale was recorded 35 kilometers southwest of Asadabad, Kunar, at a depth of 9.1 kilometers.

Just 46 minutes later, at 6:46 a.m., Asadabad experienced another aftershock with a magnitude of 4.8 and an epicenter 10 kilometers deep.

The Taliban have confirmed that the death toll from the initial quake in Kunar has now exceeded 2,200, with ongoing fears that continued seismic activity may further complicate rescue and recovery efforts.
