The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that, based on its preliminary assessment in Kunar province, around 500 hectares of farmland were damaged in the recent earthquake.
The land had been used for cultivating maize, rice, and beans, as well as orchards.
According to FAO, between 1,000 and 1,500 livestock were also killed in the disaster, with carcasses requiring immediate burial.
The organization added that the quake severely damaged irrigation systems and water resources, warning that these losses directly threaten households’ access to food and income.
FAO stressed that the timely burial of dead animals is essential to prevent the spread of disease.
Assessment teams from FAO are currently on the ground.
The Taliban has reported that 1,457 people were killed in Kunar, 3,394 were injured, and 6,782 houses were destroyed in the disaster.
