Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. envoy for peace in Afghanistan, has described Iran as a “rogue state” that, even after 45 years in power, has failed to become a civilized or normal government.

“I fear that it may never happen,” Khalilzad said in response to Australia’s recent decision to expel Iran’s ambassador.

The former U.S. diplomat emphasized that Iran’s people deserve a better government, calling the current regime an enduring threat to regional and global stability.

His comments follow a statement by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday (August 27), announcing the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador from Canberra. The move comes in response to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) being linked to at least two attacks on Jewish sites in Melbourne and Sydney last year.

Albanese also stated that Iran may have been involved in other planned attacks and confirmed that the IRGC is set to be officially designated as a terrorist organization under Australian law.
