A tragic traffic accident on the Kabul–Kandahar highway has left at least 40 people dead or injured, according to Taliban-affiliated media reports on Wednesday, August 27.
The incident occurred in the Arghandi area of Kandahar when a 580-type passenger vehicle overturned, killing 26 people and injuring 14 others. No further details have been released about the cause of the crash.
Deeyar TV’s findings reveal that between August 18 and 25, at least 142 people were killed or injured in road accidents across Afghanistan. The deadliest of these occurred on the night of August 18, when another 580 passenger vehicle—carrying migrants recently deported from Iran—collided with a motorcycle and a Mazda truck while en route to Kabul. That crash claimed 79 lives, including 19 children, and left one person injured.
Road accidents remain a persistent threat in Afghanistan, primarily due to substandard highways—many of which are narrow, poorly maintained, or damaged during Taliban-era conflicts—and the widespread absence of basic traffic infrastructure. These conditions continue to claim hundreds of lives annually.
