Australia announced on Tuesday (August 27) that it will expel Iran’s ambassador in response to Tehran’s alleged involvement in at least two attacks targeting Jewish sites in Melbourne and Sydney last year.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incidents as “extraordinarily dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign state on Australian soil.” He added that Iran may have been behind other similar operations as well.
Albanese emphasized that the attacks were deliberate attempts to undermine social cohesion and sow division within Australian society.
He also confirmed that Australia has closed its embassy in Tehran and withdrawn all diplomatic personnel from the country.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will now be designated as a terrorist organization under Australian law.
Since the outbreak of the Israel–Hamas war in October 2023, Australia has witnessed a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents, including attacks on Jewish homes, schools, synagogues, and vehicles.
