Liu Bin, Deputy Foreign Minister of China, announced that the country will host Russian President Vladimir Putin, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and leaders from over 20 countries at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
The summit is set to take place on September 9–10 in the city of Tianjin and will bring together heads of state representing nearly a quarter of the world’s population.
According to Liu, the discussions will focus primarily on deepening political and security cooperation.
The event will be held just days before one of China’s largest military parades in recent years. Analysts suggest that growing disagreements over issues such as Israel, Gaza, and trade tariffs are drawing regional leaders closer to Beijing.
“As global conditions become more unstable and complex, strengthening unity and cooperation among nations becomes increasingly important,” Liu stated. “With the stability and resilience of the SCO, we can confront uncertainty and unpredictability, and foster a favorable environment for lasting peace.”
The summit will conclude with a joint declaration containing “new commitments.”
Among the invited leaders are Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
