Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he will travel to Washington on Monday at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a post on X on Saturday (August 16), Zelensky revealed that he had held a one-hour private conversation with Trump, followed by a half-hour online meeting joined by European leaders.
Zelensky said Trump briefed him on the recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, and that the two would meet in person for further consultations.
Although the meeting between Trump and Putin was described as “constructive,” it concluded without any concrete agreement.

Zelensky voiced support for Trump’s proposal to hold a trilateral summit involving the leaders of Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, stating: “Key issues can be addressed at the leadership level, and a trilateral format is appropriate for that.”
“It is important that European leaders are involved at every stage, to ensure reliable security guarantees in coordination with the U.S.,” Zelensky wrote.
He added that he and Trump also discussed signs of potential U.S. participation in Ukraine’s security framework: “We continue to align our positions with all our partners.” Zelensky reiterated his commitment to pursuing every possible path to achieve peace.
