Sun Chanthol, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister, announced on Friday (July 31) that the country plans to nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his “direct role” in halting border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand.
Chanthol previously praised Trump for mediating peace between the two countries, calling him deserving of the award. The Nobel Peace Prize is the world’s most prestigious honor granted to an individual or organization that has made the greatest effort to “promote friendship between nations.”
Earlier, Pakistan also stated its intention to nominate Trump for his attempts to resolve tensions with India. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likewise recently declared that he had nominated Trump for the prize.
According to Reuters, a phone call by Trump helped break the deadlock in efforts to end the most intense Cambodia–Thailand border clashes in over a decade, ultimately leading to a ceasefire. Following the truce, a White House spokesperson wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that Trump was the key to the agreement and called for him to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The five-day conflict left at least 43 people dead and displaced more than 300,000 on both sides of the border.
In an interview with Reuters, Chanthol added that Washington had initially threatened to impose a 49 percent tariff, which was later reduced to 36 percent.
