Russian missile and drone strikes on the Ukrainian capital late Sunday killed at least seven people, including a six-year-old boy, and wounded 82 others, among them 10 children, Ukrainian authorities said.
The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 309 drones and eight missiles in the overnight assault. It said air defenses intercepted 288 drones and three missiles, but five missiles and 21 drones hit targets across Kyiv.
Kyiv’s military administration chief, Serhiy Tkachenko, said 27 sites in the city were struck, with the heaviest damage in the Solomyansky and Sviatoshyn districts. More than 100 buildings, including homes, schools, kindergartens, medical centers and universities, were damaged.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in a message on Telegram, said: “Today, the world once again saw Russia’s response to our calls for peace with the U.S. and Europe – new massacres. That is why peace without strength is impossible.” He urged Ukraine’s allies to fulfill defense commitments and pressure Moscow toward “real negotiations.”
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces shot down 32 Ukrainian drones overnight and denied suffering casualties. It said one drone strike ignited a fire at an industrial site in Russia’s Penza region and debris from another damaged rail lines in Volgograd, temporarily halting some trains.
Moscow also claimed full control of the strategic city of Chasiv Yar in eastern Donetsk after 18 months of heavy fighting. Ukraine’s military map indicated most of the city is under Russian control, though southern and western districts remain contested.
On the diplomatic front, U.S. President Donald Trump gave Russian President Vladimir Putin until August 7 to show “significant progress” in peace efforts or face new sanctions and tariffs from Washington.
