Deeyar TV is paying tribute to the life and enduring legacy of Ahmad Zahir – the legendary Afghan singer known as the “Diamond of the East” – on what would have been his 79th birthday, marking 46 years since his voice became immortal in the hearts of millions.
The commemoration, held at the George Washington National Memorial Hall in the United States, celebrates Zahir’s profound impact on Afghan music and culture. Often remembered as a symbol of unity and “better days,” Zahir’s songs continue to resonate across generations – from Kabul to Washington, Dushanbe to Paris – wherever his melodies are heard.
The program features celebrated Afghan vocalist Zabih Jawanmard performing Zahir’s beloved anthems, alongside Abdullah Etemadi, the jazz musician who collaborated with Zahir on many of his original recordings. Renowned instrumentalists Toryali Hashimi (tabla), Hamid Barez (percussion), and Yaser Nuri (keyboard) will also revive the spirit of Zahir’s era. A highlight of the event includes the soulful rendition of “Zahir-e Ziba Kojaast?” (“Where is Beautiful Zahir?”) by acclaimed singer Hangama.
Born in Kabul’s Deh Mazang in 1946, Zahir drew on the works of Persian poets such as Rumi, Hafez, Saadi, Bidel, Forough Farrokhzad and Simin Behbahani to create a body of work that remains unmatched in Afghan music. Over his short but luminous career, he released more than 33 albums with around 430 songs, including pieces in Pashto, Hindi and English.
Though his life ended tragically in 1979 in the Salang Tunnel, Zahir’s music transcended time – outlasting political eras and borders – and continues to unite Afghans and admirers around the world.
